Frederick, Maryland Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Frederick, population 57,000, is the fourth largest city in Maryland. It's a quiet, colonial era town, with stylish shops and eateries lining the main streets. It is a well-preserved location, surrounded by parks and mountains; and it's also a place that captures the spirit of the past with its historical sites and attractions.

Frederick is the home of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, as well as Monocacy National Battlefield and the Barbara Fritchie House and Museum. Each location depicts a particular time and place during the Civil War, and serves as a history and educational base for that time period.

Baker Park in downtown Frederick, boasts a swimming pool, tennis courts, baseball fields and a lake, with children's programs and events throughout the year. Gambrill State Park, northwest of Frederick, offers hiking and biking trails, along with campsites and picnic areas. Cunningham Falls State Park is a 5,000 acre recreation spot, located in the Catoctin Mountains, is the site of the highest waterfall in the state. Hunting and fishing are popular here, and hiking and cycling are available along one of the eight trails throughout the park.

Frederick is located east of Middletown and Braddock Heights, and north of Lily Pons in the western arm of Maryland.
